After prolonged operation, the exterior of a generator set is often covered with a thick layer of black oil sludge. Even after a surface cleaning, a thick layer of oil residue quickly accumulates again, making it difficult to clean. Why is this? It could be due to an oil leak in the engine.
An oil leak in the engine is a common issue, so there is no need to panic, but it is important to understand the common causes of engine oil leaks. Below, we will introduce the causes of engine oil leaks and their repair methods.

Causes of engine oil leaks
The primary hazard is oil loss, leading to waste, and in severe cases, insufficient oil levels may cause internal engine damage. Therefore, it is essential to closely monitor the oil level. Engine temperatures are extremely high, and oil leaks onto the engine or other high-temperature components can easily cause spontaneous combustion.
Distinguishing Between Engine Oil Leaks and Oil Seepage
Engine oil leaks and oil seepage are two distinct concepts. An engine oil leak is a fault condition; oil seepage typically involves a small amount of oil penetrating through oil seals, which is a relatively common phenomenon. Oil seepage is characterized by the fact that the oil level does not decrease rapidly, but small oil stains may be visible at engine seals, though no obvious oil stains are found on the engine guard or ground.
Causes of Engine Oil Leaks
1. Damage to the oil pan gasket or loose screws causing oil leakage; damage to or loosening of the oil pan drain plug gasket causing oil leakage
2. Deformation of the engine mount plate or poor sealing of the gasket causing oil leakage
3. Poor sealing of the valve cover gasket causing oil leakage
4. Damage to the front or rear crankshaft oil seals causing oil leakage; poor sealing of the camshaft bearing rear cover causing oil leakage
5. Oil leakage from the turbocharger.
6. Oil leakage due to poor sealing of the oil cooler.
Note: Non-engine oil leaks that may be confused with engine oil leaks:
1. When changing the oil, if the service personnel did not wipe it clean carefully, it may be mistaken for an oil leak. Such oil stains, if discovered long after the oil change, will appear as old, dry marks rather than fresh, liquid stains.
2. If too much oil is added, high oil pressure may cause some excess oil to seep out through the breather hole. The same applies to gear oil. Ensure the oil level remains within the normal range. Adding too much oil is detrimental to the engine; excess oil should be drained.
3. If you notice small oil stains around the engine, first check if they are old stains. Also, see if the amount is minimal. As long as the oil level hasn't dropped, it's not considered a leak but just seepage, and you should keep an eye on it. If you find an oil leak, fix it right away and wipe off the oil stains around it to keep the engine clean and your mind at ease.
